“How much does CRO cost?” has a simple answer and a useful one. The simple answer: from about $2,000 to about $40,000 a month, depending on who does it. The useful answer is what you get for that money, because two programmes at the same price can produce very different results.

Below: what each option costs in 2026, the costs people forget, the pricing models you’ll see, and the math to check if CRO pays for itself on your store. (Short version with what I charge: CRO pricing.)

Ranges are typical market figures for the US in 2026 and vary by provider and scope. Salary sources are in CRO specialist salary.

The column that matters most is the last one. Cost per test tells you what you really pay for each chance to find more revenue. A programme that ships 4 tests a month at $8,000 is cheaper per test than one that ships 1 test at $5,000.

What you’re actually paying for

Every A/B test needs the same work, whoever does it:

  1. Research: analytics, session recordings, reviews, surveys. Where do people drop off, and why?
  2. Strategy: which idea to test first, ranked by how much revenue it can move.
  3. Design and copy: the new version of the page, in your brand’s style.
  4. Development: building the change so it works on every device.
  5. QA and launch: checking it doesn’t break anything.
  6. Analysis: reading the result on revenue per visitor, with enough sample size to trust it.

Agencies charge for the hours behind all six steps, which is why most ship one or two tests a month. With AI, steps 1, 3 and 4 take hours instead of weeks, and the fee pays mostly for steps 2 and 6: the senior judgment that decides what to test and what a result really means.

The costs people forget

  • The A/B testing app. Its price depends on your traffic, from a small monthly fee to enterprise contracts. Pick one that fits your size.
  • Developer time if the agency only delivers designs and your team has to build them.
  • Your team’s time for briefs, approvals and feedback. Slow approvals cut the number of tests in half.
  • Shopify Plus only if you want to test inside the checkout steps. Most tests run on any plan. (Is Shopify Plus worth it?)
  • The cost of waiting. Every month without testing is revenue the store could have made and won’t get back.

CRO pricing models you’ll see

ModelHow it worksWatch out for
Monthly retainerFixed fee for an ongoing programmeAsk how many tests launch each month, in writing
Per testA price per A/B testCheap tests with no research behind them
One-off auditA report with recommendationsNobody builds or tests the ideas afterwards
Performance feeA share of the extra revenueDisputes over how the lift is measured

A retainer with a clear number of tests and reporting on revenue per visitor is the easiest to judge. An audit alone is useful only if someone then runs the tests. (What a good audit covers.)

Is CRO worth it? The ROI math

Take your monthly revenue and a realistic lift. Brands that test consistently usually see conversion rate rise 10–25% in six months.

Monthly revenue10% more conversion20% more conversion
$50,000+$5,000 a month+$10,000 a month
$100,000+$10,000 a month+$20,000 a month
$300,000+$30,000 a month+$60,000 a month
$1,000,000+$100,000 a month+$200,000 a month

Then compare that with the fee. At $100,000 a month, a 10% lift adds about $120,000 a year, and the winning changes keep earning after the test ends. Below about $50,000 a month, the lift is small and tests take longer to reach a result, so start with the free tools first: the conversion rate calculator and the ecommerce KPI checker show where your store loses the most.

Real tests show what a single win can be worth: one five-star review under Add to Cart added $67,365, and moving the product description above the button was worth about $760K a year.

How much should you budget for CRO?

A simple rule: spend on CRO no more than what a 5% lift would bring in. That way the programme pays for itself even with modest results, and anything above 5% is profit.

Store sizeSensible CRO budget
Under $50,000 a monthFree checklists, calculators and your own tests
$50,000–$100,000 a monthA freelancer or a lean programme
$100,000–$500,000 a monthA done-for-you programme, from $4,000 a month
$500,000+ a monthA larger programme with more tests in parallel, or a team

Agency, in-house or AI CRO?

In-house makes sense for very large companies that can hire and manage five people. It’s the most expensive and the slowest to start.

A traditional agency brings a full team without hiring, but you pay for every production hour, so tests are few.

AI CRO gives you senior strategy and the output of a full team, because AI builds each test in hours and a person reviews every one. That’s what I do: done-for-you AI CRO from $4,000 a month for stores doing $100,000+ a month. For one brand it meant 60+ tests in 12 months and $7M extra revenue. Frequently asked questions

How much does CRO cost per month?

In 2026, freelancers charge roughly $2,000–$6,000 a month, traditional CRO agencies $5,000–$15,000 a month, and a full in-house team costs about $40,000 a month in the US. Done-for-you AI CRO with me starts at $4,000 a month.

How much does one A/B test cost?

Divide the monthly fee by the number of tests that actually launch. With an agency at $10,000 a month and 2 tests, each test costs about $5,000. With AI building tests in hours, the cost per test drops to a fraction of that.

Is CRO worth the money for a small store?

Usually not yet. Below about $50,000 a month in revenue, a 10% lift is only a few thousand dollars, and there isn't enough traffic for fast tests. Fix the basics with free checklists and calculators first, and hire for CRO once you're near $100,000 a month.

What are the hidden costs of CRO?

The A/B testing app, developer time if the agency doesn't code, your team's time for approvals, and the cost of waiting: every month without tests is revenue you don't get back.

How long before CRO pays back?

The first winning tests often land in the first two to three months. Plan for six months to judge a programme: consistent testing usually lifts conversion rate 10–25% in that time.
