How to Choose the Best Shopify CRO Agency: 10 Questions to Ask First
How to pick the best Shopify CRO agency or ecommerce CRO consultant: 10 questions to ask, red flags, realistic results and what CRO should cost in 2026.
Searching for the “best Shopify CRO agency” returns dozens of lists. Most of them rank agencies by how they describe themselves. A better way is to ask every agency, or every ecommerce CRO consultant, the same ten questions. The answers tell you quickly who actually tests and who just redesigns.
10 questions to ask a Shopify CRO agency
1. “Can you show me real test results, with sample sizes?”
Look for visitors per variant, orders, conversion rate and revenue per visitor, like this review test on ~500,000 visitors per side. Screenshots of “+300%” without numbers mean nothing.
2. “Show me a test that lost.”
Honest testers have many. Roughly a third of ideas win, a third do nothing and a third hurt, according to Microsoft’s experiments. (Two losing tests from my own store.)
3. “Which metric decides a winner?”
The right answer is revenue per visitor (or conversion rate on very high-ticket stores). Conversion rate alone can mislead: a price test lowered conversion and added $37,219.
4. “How do you decide what to test first?”
Good answers: funnel data, customer doubts from reviews and support, and expected revenue impact. Weak answers: “best practices” and “our design team’s ideas”.
5. “How many tests will you ship per month for our traffic?”
Many agencies run one or two. Ask how long tests will run and how they handle low order volumes. (How many visitors a test needs.)
6. “Do you test, or redesign?”
A redesign launches dozens of untested changes at once. Here’s why that often lowers sales.
7. “Who builds the tests, and how fast?”
Design, copy and code waiting in a queue is where CRO dies. Ask who does the work and how many days from idea to live test.
8. “Do you work on the checkout? Do we need Shopify Plus?”
Only Plus lets you change the checkout steps. A good agency will tell you honestly whether Plus is worth it at your size.
9. “How do you connect CRO with our ads?”
The best wins often come from matching landing pages to ads and lowering cost per purchase.
10. “What results do you promise?”
The right answer is no guarantee, but a realistic range: typically 10–25% higher conversion in six months of consistent testing.
Red flags
- Promising to double your conversion rate in a month.
- Only showing wins, never losers.
- Judging tests on clicks or add-to-cart rate alone.
- Stopping tests after a few days.
- Proposing a full redesign as the first step.
- Fake urgency tactics (countdowns that reset, “only 1 left” forever).
